Biography
Over the course of lifelong creative experience Habuba Farah has established a unique artistic identity through dynamic abstract compositions based on a wide exploration of colors, geometries, and shape movements. Her style could be described as “Lyrical Geometric Abstraction” highlighting a parallel between her visual thinking and sonic universe. Farah’s body of work made a significant contribution to the history of Brazilian art.
“I identify myself as a woman and artist of Arab descent,” she mentioned speaking about how her art practice embodioi;es both Brazilian upbringings and Arab heritage. Habuba Farah was born in the family of Lebanese immigrants, moved to Brazil at the beginning of 20th century.
Over a career spanning more than 70 years, she has taken part in several Art Salons in Brazil, France, Italy, the United States and Japan. In 2019, her lithographic prints illustrated the poetry book Enquanto estou viva, by Miriam Portela. In 2021, her work was exhibited in Acervo em Transformação: doações recentes at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand - MASP. The following year, she took part in Mapa das Mulheres, at Galeria MaPa, São Paulo, Brazil. Over 90 years old, Habuba Farah continues to produce works that synthesize line and light; movement and atmosphere; poetry and a geometric formal vocabulary. In 2023, Gomide&Co held Habuba Farah, the artist's first solo show in over 30 years. On the occasion of the exhibition, her first monograph of the same name was launched in partnership with Galeria MaPa. Farah passed away in 2025 at the age of 94. A towering figure of modern art and a pioneer of lyrical geometric abstraction, she leaves behind an artistic legacy that is both singular and luminous. Her work, infused with light, rhythm, and a quiet yet resonant poetry, spans more than seven decades and has left a lasting imprint on the history of contemporary art.
